Flashback Friday: Some Like It Hot

Somewhere in time...

I'm participating in Fandango's Flashback Friday today with a post from June 19, 2021 that I found on the Wayback Machine for my old WP blog.

Hot Enough For Ya?

Are writers pyromaniacs? They sure talk about heat and fire a lot. Romance novels are full of warm looks, hot kisses, burning desires, and fireworks exploding when people make love. The obsession with heat transcends genre however. Here are some titles from my list of read books. OK, most are romance, though some are horror (as if there’s a difference).

Sizzling. One Hot Cowboy Wedding. Devilishly Hot. Firestarter. Firelight. A Song of Ice and Fire. The Girl Who Played With Fire. Little Fires Everywhere. A Dream of Fire. Heart of Fire.

What about music? Fire It Up. We Didn’t Start the Fire. Fire Down Below. Fire and Ice. The Heat Is On. Hot Summer Nights. Hot Legs. Hot Child In The City. Burning Up. I’m Burning For You. And those are just the titles!

It’s kind of weird that fire/ burning is associated with love/ sex/ romance, when it also conjures up notions of hell. Then again, considering my past relationships, perhaps it’s not strange at all…

  1. I always assumed it was because of the association of sexuality with body heat. Thus, that which is sexy or romantic is "hot".

My own poetry posts tend to have metaphors about ice, freezing, and suchlike, but then, I don't write about romance.

  2. Fire is one of those fascinating things that gets its value from how it is used - like money or atom splitting. Fire in the belly? In the fireplace? In one's heart? Good! Fire in the telly*? In front of the fireplace? In one's hair? Bad! I think the fact that fire can go either way is what captures our imagination. That, and you really do feel hot.

  3. Hi Paula, thanks for joining in on today's Flashback Friday. I believe I remember this post from your time back at WordPress, but these days my memory is such that I can't even remember having read my own posts when I go back and read them looking for what to post on Flashback Friday. I see you also responded to Jim’s Thursday Inspiration prompt and to John’s Writer’s Workshop prompt. I really wish you would return to WordPress so that your posts would show up in my reader and I could give your posts a like and more easily comment on your posts. It's such a hassle for non-Blogger bloggers like me to leave a comment on Blogger blogs. And of course, it’s all about me, right? Anyway, I am going to read a few more of your recent posts, but I can't leave you a “like” (since that feature doesn't exist in Blogger) and I won't leave a comment because it’s a hassle. But take my word, I will read them.

    (Come back, Paula)

    1. I’m not so bitter now that more time has passed since my last disaster 🙂

  5. I'm sure someone can do a deep dive and find various reasons why. I am not that person.

  6. Where I live, a fiery hot romance would not take place in the summer. Yuck! 100 degrees and the threat of forest fires have a way of cooling down those notions!

    1. IKR? I don't find summer a sexy season, lol. Give me some Bailey's and cuddling by the fireplace...

  7. Fire, romance, and me? Probably not so much. I'm more like cold feet, colder hands, and a warm (only) heart. This should probably depress me.

    1. Haha, I'm usually cold too, including my heart ;)
