Back to Blue

I was so bored the other day that I reinstalled the Bluesky app on my phone. It was fun for a little while to see all the kitty and sunset pics again, but already I am tired of the place. It’s just everyone bitching about politics 24/7 and reposting memes or quotes. Same as FB really ~ you have to slog through so much samey same to get to one fun foodie post or actual life update. At least Bluesky doesn’t have ads. Gotta give ‘em that. The feeds aren’t much help because, for example, if you go to Booksky it’s mostly folks hyping books to sell, not having book discussions. The micropoetry feed is the best one (regular poetry gets too political).

Sometimes I visit Reddit to read the (often fake) AITA posts and other questions about finding the name of a song or movie. The comments are often entertaining, but ultimately it’s a giant bore too. Regarding FB, if it weren’t for my book club, I wouldn’t be there much at all. The ads are absolutely insane. Same insanity with Instagram ads, but the photos are often awesome.

Anyway. I’ve been watching an older Hulu reality show called Arranged, which may be as fake as the bachelor type shows, but it’s more entertaining. Sometimes it’s predictable but other times not so much, so it’s holding my interest. The premise is about arranged marriage, though most of the couples haven’t been coerced; they just didn’t go through the “normal” American dating rituals before becoming engaged. The parents are also part of the process, so we hear a lot from them. In S1, we follow a Romani couple (both teenagers) in NYC, a “southern belle” and her husband in South Carolina, and an Indian couple in Los Angeles. For a while, two out of the three marriages seemed to be utter fails, and the third wasn’t doing that great either, but by the end of the season, they all appeared to be doing OK. My favorite couple is the Romani couple’s parents ~ they’re hilarious!

SPOILER! Via Meta AI, I discovered that after 10 years all three couples are still married and have two children each. That is pretty impressive, especially compared to the bachelor/ bachelorette shows where they seem to break up like five minutes after the finale. That said, I don't think I will watch S2, at least not anytime soon.

L and I watched a very strange romcom/ sci-fi movie on Netflix on Friday: Our Times (Nuestros Tiempos). It was about a brilliant female physicist (Nora) in 1966 Mexico who had invented a time travel machine. Her husband (Hector) was also a physicist, but he received much more respect for his work, even though hers was equal or greater. They set their machine for 15 minutes of TT, but they end up jumping to 2025, where Nora is treated very differently (aka better) than she was in the 60s; Hector however has issues with the modern era and makes a butthead of himself. Shenanigans ensue, and it’s a bit cheesy but also fun and occasionally profound. This movie was in Spanish with subtitles.

Breaking mews: I just cuddled Inky on my lap for about a minute.

Also! My daughter says that Inky's full, formal name is INKERBELLE.

That's all. Book reviews next time.

  1. LAP CUDDLE!!! 🥰 So happy for you both! (Had caps lock on for another reason, but saw no reason to take it off here.)
    Also: Inkerbelle is perfect! 🌟

I like reading AITA on Reddit, too. My favorite sub is Malicious Compliance, but it seems to be attracting AI stories now. So may as well read r/stories.
