I can't decide if I want to put a giddy exclamation point after my title, or leave off punctuation, knowing some will say it in a Hello, Clarice voice, and I think I'm OK with that. I just looked up "Hello, Clarice," and it turns out Hannibal Lecter never said it during the entirety of The Silence of the Lambs, even though people think he did. I mean, can't you hear it in your mind (if you've seen the movie)? This is called the Mandela Effect, which is named after the false memory phenomenon of zillions of people believing they read that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s when he did not (he served as President of South Africa from 1994-1999 and died in 2013). Jim Carrey did an imitation of Hannibal using the phrase, so perhaps it's his fault. In any case, the problem was solved by the franchise itself, as they included Hello, Clarice in the sequel Hannibal.
During my dive into the Mandela Effect, I came across parallel realities, which is part of the theory that all possible universes actually exist, and we are only aware of one of them, usually. Sometimes there's a blip, and a piece of "memory" floats in from another world, but it's not a memory ~ it's us living in that other world. Freaky, huh? It's a good premise for fiction, like that movie with Gwyneth Paltrow Sliding Doors. I'll have to rewatch that; I think I fell asleep halfway through, which is not unusual for me when I watch movies that aren't mysteries/thrillers at home on my cozy sofa. Some physicists insist that the many-worlds theory is the only logical outcome of quantum mechanics, which reminds me of a GPS device directing you off a cliff. (Check it out for yourself.)
I haven't felt well last couple days due to my vaccines, so I haven't done as much as I planned. Didn't go to the Greek Festival and nixed more painting (for now). There are still two days left of my weekend, and I feel good today, so we shall see. I've just been so tired. Yesterday I rewatched Mamma Mia and the sequel Here We Go Again, which were fabulous, as always. Of course, I cried twice during the second one, as always. I never get tired of them, and I hope they do a third one. Supposedly, it's happening with Meryl Streep back from the dead, though I have no idea how they'll work that out. Maybe the third movie is set chronologically between the first two? Regardless, Christine Baranski will be in the third installment reprising her Tanya role, and I adore her, so yay!
My TV was being weird yesterday with Prime movies freezing up, and I didn't feel like going through the arduous process of uninstalling/reinstalling everything, so I restarted my Roku, which seemed to do the trick. I hate when things don't work right. Bluesky has completely glitched from the influx of a ton of new users (mostly from Brazil, since they just banned Xitter there). None of the feeds are working except the main one, which is a godawful mess to get through and isn't in chronological order. I can't stand that. It drives me nuts on FB too, which is why I try to read FB mainly on my laptop, where I've installed Social Fixer. Another annoyance is that even though I set my iPad text message app to sync with the one on my phone, it refuses to do that, so when I go on my iPad, I see all these old, stupid, deleted spam texts. Grrrr!
I have become one of those people (aka "human") who can't seem to resist yummies when they are in the house, so I have resorted to the high-tech trick of not buying them at all. (Sob!) I've been snacking on frosted mini-wheats and eating a lot of salad, when I really want pizza and cookies. This morning, a cheesy omelet and a buttery biscuit would have hit the spot, but instead I had... fruit. Cantaloupe, banana, blueberries. Almond tea. I didn't even add sugar to anything! Who am I anymore? I don't even know. I only know that I don't want to go on meds for high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol, so I am trying to fix things myself.
When I was at CVS Friday for my jabs, I perused their small paperback section and spied an old-timey romance novel that sounded good called The Prince's Bride. I'm always a sucker for a punny title, so I bought it on Amazon for my Kindle using credits. It's an OK book, as far as the genre, but I guess I am tired of the genre. Same old, same old. Even the relatively unique circumstances are not that interesting ~ a prince exiled himself to a cave in the forest and is training horses for a living. As a child, he was betrothed to a family friend's daughter, and one night he rescues a screaming damsel in distress from a band of highwaymen. Guess who? Meh. To be fair, she'd been looking for him, so it wasn't that weird she was in the forest, as he'd mentioned the forest in his old correspondence to her. But you know... forests are large. In most fiction of whatever genre, we have to accept the most ridiculous coincidences, so I don't blame my attitude on the fact that this is a romance novel. I've just read so many books that I need something completely different to enthrall me.
Yet I am fine with rewatching musicals a zillion times. I'm nothing if not inconsistent.
PS: What have they done to bananas lately? Why do they ripen so fast and then go ick? Used to be, I could keep them for a week.
PPS: I watched the first episode of Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building, and it was really good! The characters and storylines are always bizarre, which is probably why I like it.
Yay season 4! Also, Missouri bananas must be different. The skins are about 1/4" thick, (slight exaggeration,) requiring a steak knife to partially cut through at the top in order to begin peeling, but before that, they take days and days to actually ripen enough to eat. I have no idea where they come from, or where your neck of the woods gets bananas.
ReplyDeleteI am going to watch the new Only Murders tonight. Can't wait. And book on the shots causing you to feel crappy. I joined our neighborhood book club, but they keep picking books that appeal to Millenials and Gen Zers. We're all over 50. I'm nit reading any more of their picks. Right now, reading The Maid. Not bad. -Nat
ReplyDeleteNot sure if my original comment "took." It acted funny. Anyway, looking forward to S4 of OMB. And to say bananas around here are ridiculously tough. Usually have to use a knife to make a cut at the top to begin peeling. Weird.
ReplyDeleteHi Roy, yep, both comments were in the queue. Here, you buy greenish bananas, they ripen the next day, and two days later they’re overripe.
ReplyDeleteNat, I have lost interest in my meetup groups. The book club I am currently in is an offshoot of a former meetup group with 10 women who enjoy current light mystery and romance. I thought I read a book titled The Maid, but it was The Maid’s Diary. It was just OK. Yay Murders!
ReplyDeleteI CANNOT believe how many typos are in my comment above. UGH. I'm going to have to proofread more carefully. YEESH. - Nat
ReplyDeleteWe buy bananas that are green-ish, and they're good for 5-6 days. Regional differences, maybe like politics.
ReplyDeleteNat, I hate when that happens.
ReplyDeleteRoy, maybe it’s regional…
Hiya! I liked Sliding Doors though it's been years. Time travel/parallels are still among my favorite sci-fi, even though it seems ubiquitous in the genre. Recent faves were Loki and Umbrella Academy, and the new Deadpool + Wolverine flick was funny. My pardner wants to dive into Only Murders. I had shied off based on a friend's rec of S1, but really Steve & Martin? How could it not be good?
ReplyDeleteHi Tim, thx for the rex! I wasn’t a fan of OMITB S2, but S3 pulled me back in.
ReplyDeleteI’m going to wait until the entire season of “Only Murders…” has aired and then binge-watch it. I enjoy shows much more when I binge-watch them than if I have to wait a week between episodes. I've reached the age where I can't remember what happened in last week's episode after a whole week has elapsed. So, please, Paula, no spoilers in your posts, okay? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNo spoilers for Fandango!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for tonight's episode. Right, no spoilers, not here. But you're welcome to chat about it with me on FB, Paula. - Nat :-)
ReplyDeleteA use for FB, hurrah!
ReplyDeleteSorry, I'm running behind on blogs at the moment with everything on in my life and the world. I did get your email, haven't dealt with it yet, although I will.
ReplyDeleteRe: Silence of the Lambs (which I haven't seen): there are a lot of "famous" film/TV lines that people make up, either completely or partially e.g. "Play it again, Sam" and "Beam me up, Scotty."
No worries, Daniel! I didn't know those two were also not quotes. Thanks!
