I somehow missed this 2002 romcom starring Sandra Bullock, one of my favorite actors, as Lucy Kelson. I mean, I thought I had seen it and kept passing it by on Netflix, but last night I figured what the heck let's rewatch it... and it turned out that I had never seen it. Hugh Grant costars as George Wade, and I used to think of him as a hot, hunky honey with a scrumptious British accent (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Music and Lyrics, etc.), or maybe it was always just the accent that got me, but last night I realized that he annoys me. He always plays the same character! He's a cute, awkward, gawky, bumbling, self-effacing, sarcastic guy whether he's a mild bookstore owner or a ruthless real estate developer. Fair cop: I haven't seen the Bridget Jones movies, so maybe he's different there. Btw, my failure to see the Bridget movies is not an oversight like TWN ~ I deliberately avoid Renee Zellweger, except in Chicago. I find her ungodly irritating too. Anyway, Sandra is perfect in TWN, as she always is, and please do not argue with me about that. I love her! Oh, right. I didn't love her in that adventure movie where she plays a romance novelist who falls in love with her cover model. The Lost City. God, that was dumb, and Sandra was so botoxed up that her face was expressionless the entire time.
TWN has the usual romcom-style contrived plot. George (unscrupulous RE guy) impulsively offers Lucy (Harvard educated liberal lawyer) a $250K/year chief counsel position after she and a few comrades block his latest development by lying down in the street. She takes the job only because George promises not to raze her favorite community center if she hops aboard. George is a naive but charming idiot, and he spends all day trying to choose ties and seduce new women. This is completely unbelievable, given his alleged career. Lucy is a compulsive overeater, which is also not believable, given her slim build. George calls her at all hours to help him with trivial decisions, and she finally gets so annoyed she tries to quit, but she can't because she signed an ironclad contract that she herself drew up. I think her mom (also a lawyer) figures out how Lucy can get out of this contract, but ICBW because I was only half-watching at this point. George calls around, making it impossible for Lucy to get hired somewhere else, so she decides to find her own replacement in hopes that George will let her go. Finally, she finds one: another gorgeous Harvard grad whom George instantly likes, and then of course Lucy gets jealous of her, blah blah blah. Lucy and George have minimal chemistry, imo, so none of their behavior makes much sense to me. I almost hated this movie a lot, except that Norah Jones has a cameo as a singer/piano player (I love her), and Donald Fucking Trump has a cameo as himself. Dare I say he was good/funny in his minute on screen? No? OK then.
Moving on. I took my kitty back to the vet this morning because he has been steadily losing weight for no apparent reason (he is 13.5 years old, and he has lost around a pound and a half in the last few years, which is a lot percentage-wise). The doc couldn't find anything obviously wrong, so he ordered a panel of geriatric tests in hopes that something comes up we can treat ~ we did this same test last March, but nothing came up. The new results should be in in a day or two. I love Gatsby so much and am super worried about him, so I hope they find something that can be easily fixed or at least staved off for five plus years (as long as he can be happy and have a good quality of life), but if the tests are all OK, then idk. Maybe a scan for cancer. Sads.
Gonna have lunch then go to work.
Kitty health is so tricky! Could be thyroid, too. I hope you get answers! Give Gatsby scritches from me!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keera. Yes, the doc has suspected thyroid all year, but the last set of tests came back normal. Hopefully, the new tests will reveal something treatable 🤞🏻
