Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch

Breakfast is allegedly the most important meal of the day, and I almost always eat something so I don’t get a headache, but I am not into anything complicated, nor am I going to cook (as if!). I’ve been having a protein bar for brekky for about a million years, and I’m tired of them, so lately I’ve been having toast with PB/jam or cereal with milk. It’s important to have some protein/fat or else I will be hungry for a snack at 10am. My favorite cereal is Cracklin’ Oat Bran, which is usually on sale at Target.

Lunch though… I love lunch. It’s my favorite meal of the day, and I always have something delicious and filling. At work, it’s usually a frozen prepared meal with protein and veggies plus an apple or other fresh fruit. Maybe carrot sticks too. I try to eat fruit and/or veg at lunch because if I don’t, I won’t have enough healthy food in a day. Once in a while, this is impossible, such as when I am forced to eat a yummy cheeseburger and fries with my book club peeps on the weekend, but most days I stick to the plan. Recently, I had two perfect lunches, and I came here to tell you about them.

Saturday, I impulsively treated myself to lunch at one of my favorite little cafes ~ the one inside Mother’s Market in Huntington Beach. This restaurant has the best veggie quesadilla anywhere (and I have tried tons of them). It’s chock full of mushrooms along with other veggies, cooked perfectly crisp and gooey, and served with generous scoops of guacamole and sour cream. Salsa on the side. Absolutely delicious… and only ten bucks! Note to self: return to Mother’s more often.

As I was writing this, my friend J and I made plans to go to Mother’s again on Saturday!

Sunday, my daughter treated me to lunch at Lamalo Cafe on West Pico in Los Angeles. First, we were just going to get a drink… and then we thought hmm why not a pastry… but it was lunchtime, so we ordered lunch. I forget what she had, some kind of croissant maybe, but I had the most delicious quiche ever. The crust was heavenly, and the quiche itself had eggplant in it. Eggplant! In a quiche! So good. They served it with a surprise green salad, so it was a balanced (and delightful) meal. I was so satisfied that I didn’t even need a cookie.

Generally for dinner, I have something very light, such as fruit. Or an avocado (which is technically a fruit). If I haven’t had any bread yet, I might have toast instead. If I am going out, I have a lighter lunch that day. All day long, I drink tea, which is supposedly good for you. Gave up coffee, no problem… am trying to give up diet soda, but that’s really hard. For now, I’m simply trying to have less.

Funny to write about food sans pics. Of course I have some! But one of my new blogging rules is to avoid pics as well as prompts. Straight text here for serious readers. Haha. I’ll put the lunch pics on Instagram.

  1. Your quesadilla and quiche sound delicious!

I was nearly religious about eating breakfast until I gave it up for a while to do intermittent fasting. To my surprise, I didn't miss it. A bit of coffee with milk in it (aka, a latte) held me until lunch at 11 (we eat early in Norway). My workplace has a great cafeteria so always something filling there. The perk of no longer eating breakfast? I'm no longer distracted in the morning because I read while eating or running late because I just had to eat. So now I get to work by 8 rather than 9, and I love getting home earlier. I do eat a proper hot meal for dinner; sometimes I've even made it myself (heh).

  4. The quiche sounds wonderful. It's been a minute since I had a slice of quiche, and it would be nice to find one with eggplant. Love it, and I usually get eggplant parm when we go out for Italian. My fellow diners look at me like i have two heads. I go light at breakfast, too, but because I go to the gym or physical therapy in the morning and I don't want to get gassy. Lol. Lunch is the favorite meal. - N
